From the Opening Non-Sequitur of Free-Style "Dancing' in the the Streets" to all of the Black Heritage with Culture Wall Hangings and "Revival Meeting" Church Whailings, there is "Blackness" the Borderline Blasphemous with context to the Film Title is "Black Speak". The Film, a Remake of a 1972 "Blaxploitation" Called "Ganja and Hess", is the Story of an Upper-Class Blood Licker. It's a Beautifully Shot, Mess of a Story about, one Guesses, Addiction. But Who Knows? The Movie is so Everywhere the Message gets Lost somewhere between the Soft-Porn and the Awful Film's Ambiguity Sparks Over Analysis. Truth be Told the Movie is Visually Arresting and Not Much Else. It's Different, certainly Not for Everyone, and is somewhat Engaging, but the Pace and the Script are so Slow and Uninteresting that there is Never any real Connection Between the Audience and the Screen. A remake of Ganja and Hess, this is one of Spike Lee's most cinematic of films, carefully lensed, well scored albeit with music that reminded me of Love, American Style - maybe that's the point, and intelligently acted. It's the antithesis, in fact, of his previous film, Red Hook Summer, which had its good points but ultimately looked like a student film. It evokes both Gunn’s eccentric tone and themes of addiction, as well as European cinema, from lush ambiance to the sensuality and passion and stylized atmosphere of Jean Rollin. And so it wasn’t a stretch for Shock to sit down with the incomparable filmmaker and his Sweet Blood star taking over for Marlene Clark as Ganja and discuss the darker places their not-vampire film goes. The titillation flirts with self-parody, and the subsequent shot, of husband and wife lapping a pool of blood off a bathroom floor like house cats, is even worse. Viewers who saw Cronos, Guillermo del Toros 1993 twist on vampire mythology, may remember a similar but much more effectively unsettling image. Lee says that he hasn’t seen Gunn’s original film in years, but whether by design or coincidence, Sweet Blood easily conjures the airless, alternate-reality feel of certain low-budget ’70s indies; its mannered performances and self-conscious monologues feel like nothing in contemporary cinema. They pair oddly with Bruce Hornsbys wistful, wholesome score, which encourages us to expect a moral message that never really materializes As allegory, the picture requires viewers to connect most of the dots without assistance, offering a preachy bit of dialogue once or twice but failing to use action or the camera to say much about non-sanguinary addictions. By comparison, Jarmusch required only a few shots of glassed-over eyes and blissed-out levitation to link his hipster bloodsuckers’ pleasures to those pursued by heroin addicts.
